A must visit for all art lovers looking to expand their knowledge of contemporary art is 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair.

As the leading art fair dedicated to Contemporary Art from Africa and its diaspora with editions in London, New York and Marrakech, 1-54 is an emerging art fair founded in 2013 by Touria El Glaoui, with its very first edition at Somerset House in London.

This year is a big one for 1-54, which is launching its first edition ever on the African continent, namely in the vibrant city of Marrakesh, Morocco. Running between the 24 – 25 February at super glam and luxurious palace Hotel La Mamounia, 1-54 will present 17 international galleries and turn Marrakech into a lively hub for contemporary art with numerous talks, temporary exhibitions and performances programme across the city.

And the best news? The fair has free admission, and so are all satellite events and exhibitions!

Out & About in Marrakesh

While in Marrakech, don’t miss the chance to buy some spices, carpets and babouches in the souks of Medina, where you’ll surely get lost physically and in translation, but that’s part of the fun! For a pricier, but very classy shopping visit the boutique of Riad El Fenn, hotel co-owned by Marrakech Biennale founder Vanessa Branson.

When hunger strikes hit Nomad, a trendy restaurant with a beautiful terrace where you can relax in the sun and enjoy views of the Medina. If you are looking for a more refined dining experience, with typical Moroccan food go to Al Fassia in Guéliz, where advance booking is highly recommended.

For an entertaining and typical night out, check out Place Jemaa el Fna, where storytellers, dancers and snake charmers will enchant you. After that, enjoy a cup of Moroccan mint tea in one of the terraces on the square for breath-taking views and, if you’re in the right place, a belly dancing show.

Whether it’s your first time or not, a visit to Marrakech is a must and 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair is the perfect excuse!
