Òleo sobre tela – an excursion through Cuban modern and contemporary art

Artemporary is temporary abroad, for once on the sunny side of the world. I am in Cuba and more precisely in Havana. The city is beautiful and its architecture diverse and fascinating. Its culture inevitably signed by the revolutions and their heroes.
But what about its contemporary art? That’s an easy one… When you go to Havana and visit the Museo de la Revolucion (one of the must-see!) leave the Granma behind you and around the corner you will find the temple of Cuban moder and contemporary art – Museo de Arte Cubano.

I was really impressed by some of the works I contemplated in the museum… It felt like seeing a strong echo of what was happening in Europe throughout the XX century but declined in a certain original Cuban manner. A cultural embargo on the other way around? Only a couple of names rang somehow a bell in my mind – Wifredo Lam and Tomas Sanchez. The rest were unknow to me…. Here some other names that have particularly captured my attention:
